Direct and Indirect speech को Narration भी कहा जाता है, हिंदी में इसे प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष कथन कहते हैं।Narration शब्द का शाब्दिक अर्थ 'कथन' होता है। इस शब्द का निर्माण Narrate शब्द से हुआ है। Narrate शब्द का शाब्दिक अर्थ to say/to state होता है।
1. He told me that he helped me.
उसने मुझे बताया कि उसने मेरी मदद की।
2. Jessica said to me, "You have to do this work."
जेसिका ने मुझसे कहा, "आपको यह काम करना होगा।"
3. The teacher said, "water is essential for life."
शिक्षक ने कहा, "जीवन के लिए पानी आवश्यक है।"
4. She will tell me that she is ready to help me.
वह मुझे बताएगी कि वह मेरी मदद करने के लिए तैयार है।
5. The teacher said to the students, "You should help the poor."
शिक्षक ने छात्रों से कहा, "आपको गरीबों की मदद करनी चाहिए।"
किसी की कही हुई बात को दो तरीके से व्यक्त किया जाता है:

1. Direct Speech
जब किसी Speaker (वक्ता) के मूल कथन को हम हू-ब-हू उसी के शब्दों में व्यक्त करते हैं, तब इसे Direct Speech कहते हैं। Direct Speech हमेशा Inverted Commas (".......") की अंदर रखा जाता है।
Example (उदाहरण)
1. The boys said, "We are going to play."
लड़कों ने कहा "हमलोग खेलने जा रहे हैं।"
2. Mother asked me, "are you ok?"
माँ ने मुझसे पुछा, "क्या तुम ठीक हो?"
3. She said to me, "Are you a student?"
उसने मुझसे कहा, "क्या तुम छात्र हो?"
4. Mother said, "the sun rises in the East."
माँ ने कहा, "सूरज पूर्व में उगता है।"
5. He asked me, "Where do you live?"
उसने मुझसे पुछा, "तुम कहाँ रहते हो?"
6. They said to the boy, "You sang well."
उन्होंने लड़के से कहा, "आपने अच्छा गाया।"
7. He says, "I could pass the examination."
वह कहता है, "मैं परीक्षा पास कर सकता था।"
8. Stephen told me, "Henry is my friend."
स्टीफन ने मुझसे कहा, "हेनरी मेरे दोस्त हैं।"
9. My mother said, "You should take care of your health."
मेरी माँ ने कहा, "आपको अपने स्वास्थ्य का ख्याल रखना चाहिए।"
10. William said to Stephen, "You are my best friend."
विलियम ने स्टीफन से कहा, "आप मेरे सबसे अच्छे दोस्त हैं।"
2. Indirect Speech
जब किसी Speaker (वक्ता) के मूल कथन में कुछ हेर-फेर कर उसके आशय या सारांश को अपने शब्दों में व्यक्त करते तब इसे Indirect Speech कहते हैं। Indirect Speech को Inverted Commas के अंदर नहीं रखा जाता है।

1. I told her that he was a good player.
मैंने उससे कहा कि वह एक अच्छा खिलाड़ी था।
2. William said that he was ready.
विलियम ने कहा कि वह तैयार था।
3. The teacher said that he had come late.
शिक्षक ने कहा कि वह देर से आया था।
4. William said that the girl had been dancing.
विलियम ने कहा कि लड़की नृत्य कर रही थी।
5. He said to the boy that he was a child.
उसने लड़के से बताया कि वह एक बच्चा था।
6. She told me that he had been waiting for me for two days.
उसने मुझे बताया कि वह दो दिनों से मेरा इंतजार कर रही थी।
7. He told Henry that he was foolish.
उसने हेनरी से कहा कि वह मूर्ख था।
8. Henry said that he was busy.
हेनरी ने कहा कि वह व्यस्त था।
9. She said that we must respect our elders.
उसने कहा कि हमें अपने बुजुर्गों का सम्मान करना चाहिए।
10. He said that God is everywhere.
उन्होंने कहा कि भगवान हर जगह है।
